For comparison a related two branch oil lamp by Thomas Messenger having caryatid figures supporting the lamp column is illustrated and discussed in Country House Lighting, Exhibition Catalogue, Temple Newsam, 992, p.138. The present lamp would have formerly been illuminated with a colza oil reservoir and burner.
