Lot Essay

This inverted breakfront shelf, scrolling acanthus flanking the central rectangular tablet, and Ionic columns are found on a 1744 design for a continued chimneypiece in Some Designs of Mr Inigo Jones and Mr Kent by John Vardy. Undoubtedly, Kents' designs continued to be used for some years, as an enriched version is illustrated plate 33 in John Crunden's The Chimneypiece Maker's Daily Assistant of 1766. Reputedly, two pencil inscriptions were found under the frieze, recording the date when this surround was installed, presumably from another house: 'Fixed this Mantel Piece Oct 11/1890' & 'Walter Dunford & Fred Mason'.
