Lot Essay
Designed in the 'Italian' taste and executed accordingly in carved walnut, upholstered in embossed floral leather, decorated with mannerist motifs. Although reminiscent of the commission undertaken by the Royal cabinet-makers and decorators Holland & Sons for Queen Victoria at Osborne House, (see E Joy, English Furniture 1800-51, p. 1883), their design is actually much closer to the original pattern, illustrated as 'No. 2 Italian, designed for Osborne House', in Henry Whitaker's Treasury of Designs, published in 1847, which raises the possibility that they were also produced by Holland & Sons.
