Lot Essay

This appears to be a full scale drawing of a 15th century Timurid Persian tile inscription, which reputedly is copied from the mural decoration in the Great Mosque of Firouz Shah in Deccan. Firouz Shah was greatly venerated in Iran, and this panel was reputedly commissioned by a member of the ruling Qajar family. The main band of thuluth script is written in Persian; the upper band of kufic script is in Arabic.
