Lot Essay

Several features suggest this maker including: the faint traces of gilding to the incised decoration, the use of solid rosewood, and the moulded edge detail which, although clearly apparent from the exterior, is also repeated inside the rail. N.B. similarities to the published EW Godwin furniture, such as the finial and block of the side chair, (a version of the Dromore pattern), executed by William Watt, illustrated in The Secular Furniture of EW Godwin, Susan Weber Soros, no. 125, p. 104, which, when inverted, resembles the leg of this stool and the turned leg and lightly incised detail of the oak Dromore sofa, (Soros, no. 128, p. 107), there attributed to Collinson & Lock.
