Lot Essay

An almost identical chair in the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne, is illustrated in The Secular Furniture of EW Godwin, Susan Weber Soros, no. 117, page 97, where the model is attributed to EW Godwin and described as probably made by William Watt: 'This 'steamer chair' is a folding version of Godwin's wicker chair design. The turned supports and the delineation of the splat resemble Godwin's lightweight chair model (ibid., no. 107, Wicker Chair, p. 88). Godwin also used the same split cane for his wicker chair design. The idea of a folding chair would have appealed to Godwin's functional approach to design.'
