The lantern and accessories were purchased by the vendor's father circa 1977. The lantern is believed to have been used at, and perhaps partly made in, the Horwich Locomotive Works which closed in 1983. It was shown on the BBC's Antiques Roadshow programme where it was enthusiastically described by resident expert Hilary Kay 'as the Rolls Royce of lanterns'.
