Blackpool airport formally opened on 18 October 1909 and Blackpool Aviation Week was held 18-23 October 1909. At the same time a rival event was being held at Doncaster. The Blackpool week was held under the auspices of the [Royal] Aero Club of Great Britain and the municipal authorities making it Britain's first official flying meeting. The aircraft (and pilots) participating in the event included three Voisins (Rougier, Fournier and Mortimer Singer), one Farman (Henry Farman and Louis Paulhan), two Bleriots (LeBlanc and Parkinson), one Antoinette (Latham), one Roe Triplane (A.V. Roe), three unspecified monoplanes (Saunderson, Creese and Neale), and one unspecified biplane (Fernandes).
