Conan Doyle wrote the first Sherlock Holmes story in 1887 and by the turn of the century this charismatic literary character had already become a film star. In 1900 the short novelty film Sherlock Baffled was shot in New York. Since then there have been literally hundreds of Holmes movies featuring a wide range of acting talents who have donned the Inverness cape and the deerstalker to utter the immortal words, 'The game's afoot!'. This collection includes films by three of the greatest impersonators of the Baker Street sleuth. Eille Norwood was the silent Sherlock. In the early twenties Norwood starred in numerous two reelers, each based on a Conan Doyle story. Indeed the author heartily approved of Norwood's interpretation of his hero. Arthur Wontner was the first talking Holmes, appearing in five movies in the 1930s. This collection includes two of the best. The greatest of all the cinematic Holmes was Basil Rathbone. Between 1939 and 1946 he played the detective, along with Nigel Bruce as Watson in fourteen features. These films still thrill and entertain today ensuring that these two actors will be for ever regarded as the personification of Conan Doyle's magical duo. David Stuart Davies
