Lot Essay

This image was used on the front-cover of Time magazine, 13th June, 1949. Boris Chaliapin, a noted portraitist and illustrator for Time magazine, created over 400 cover illustrations for the magazine between 1939 and 1970. The present work, painted in a meticulously realistic style, includes part of a rose-decorated parasol which the Princess is holding.

Chaliapin was the son of Feodor Chaliapin, an important Russian opera singer. Boris received his art education in Russia and Paris and first exhibited his work in the foyer of the London Covent Garden Theatre in 1927.
