Lot Essay

Cockfighting was introduced to Britain by the Romans before it was made illegal in 1653 by Oliver Cromwell. In 1709 a treatise was written on the 'Royal Pastime of Cock-fighting' describing it as a warlike sport and argued to be not only ancient and honourable but also useful and profitable. It was outlawed again in 1835 for the final time.
