Each engraved with a sailing ship beneath the Sunderland Bridge, titled below, within a rectangular cartouche engraved with ovolos, the rim with starred swags, on knopped stems

Displayed in the Garden Room display cabinet in the Private Apartment of H.R.H. The Princess Margaret, Countess of Snowdon at Kensington Palace.

Lot Essay

These glasses were produced between 1820 and 1840, even though the bridge was opened in 1796. This straight sided bucket shape was the favourite for engraved work, especially souvenir glasses, and is synonymous with the 'Sunderland glasses'.
