Princess Margaret celebrated her 21st birthday at Balmoral. She spent part of the morning answering some of the many of the messages of congratulations she had received and then joined the rest of the Royal Family on the grouse moor. After a picnic lunch she watched the shoot. In the evening a dinner and dance was held, during which the King proposed Princess Margaret's health. After dinner the guest assembled to watch the lighting of a bonfire built during the day to mark the occasion. It was reported that the flames could be seen for over five miles.

The Times recorded the gift of the silver cigarette-box from the employees at Sandringham together with the gifts from the tenants at Balmoral and Sandringham, the St. John Ambulance Brigade (see lot 871) , Dr. Barnardo's Homes and also from Queen Mary who was at Sandringham.
