Lot Essay

Carl Toms, Oliver Messel's last assistant, was a close friend of both Princess Margaret and Lord Snowdon. A brilliant draughtsman, he not only designed frocks and masks for Princess Margaret, but also collaborated with Lord Snowdon in the design of commemorative ware. He received many awards for scenic design, including a Tony Award in 1975 as Best Scenic Designer for "Sherlock Holmes" and the Laurence Olivier Theatre Award for Best Designer in 1982 for "The Provoked Wife".
