This medallion mirror, with Grecian-black bordered and reed-enriched frame, reflects the fashion for introducing light and picturesque effects to rooms promoted in particular by the architect Sir John Soane (d.1837) around 1800. Amongst the leading manufacturers of 'Convex and Concave Mirrors', at the period was the Strand firm of Thomas Fentham & Co. (fl. 1807-1820) (see C. Gilbert, Marked London Furniture, Leeds, 1996).
