Lot Essay

The spread of transfer printing in the reign of George III made copying the satirical prints of the day easy. By mirroring the customs and fashions of the late 18th and early 19th Centuries the factories produced a piece of social history. The source of this particular design was a print published in 1789, copied by many factories but used, by no coincidence, to decorate the wares utilised in male dominated establishments.
