Lot Essay

Sharing the same name as the Danish national botanical encyclopaedia from which the flowers studies were copied, the Flora Danica service was commissioned by Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark in 1790. According to tradition the service was intended as a gift for the Empress Catherine the Great of Russia. The gifted artist and great porcelain painter Johann Christoph Bayer carefully reproduced motifs from the comprehensive encyclopaedia, taking him twelve years to complete.
