Shaped oblong and with cut corners, the hinged cover engraved with a scene of the harbour at Amsterdam, the base engraved with a scene of the harbour at Rotterdam, the sides engraved with a hare coursing scene, marked inside

Lot Essay

Leendert Beekhuys was born in Amsterdam in 1708 and specialised in engraved tobacco boxes such as the example offered here. Two other examples by him are illustrated in J. W. Frederiks, Dutch Silver, The Hague, vol. II, page 105. Other examples, similarly engraved and also by Beekhuys, were sold from the Dreesmann collection, Christie's Amsterdam, 16 April 2002, lots 1063 and 1074.
