A LITURGICAL TEXTILE WITH THE SCENE OF THE LAMENTATION
RUSSIAN, 19TH CENTURY
Christ's lifeless body on the tombstone is attended by Nikodemos, Joseph of Arimathea and the Virgin and John, flanked by angels. Four cherubs appear on the corners. The scene is framed by large-size alternate ears-of-wheat and clusters-of-grapes motifs, as references to the sacrament of the Holy Communion. The velvet ground has a dull gold/green backing. The raised embroidery is made of spun gilt and silver thread, employing couched work and applied sequins. The knotted fringe has tassels at its four corners. 30½ X 22 5/8 in. (77.5 x 57.5 cm.)
