James Joyce

Sean O'Sullivan subscribed to the academic realist tradition and the present example is a sensitive portrayal of one of Ireland's greatest authors and most influential writers of the 20th Century, James Joyce (1882-1941). He travelled extensively with wife Nora Barnacle throughout his life (living in Trieste, Zurich and Paris) but Ireland, and more specifically Dublin, remained fundamental to his work. In his Ulysses he transports the characters and events of Homer's Odyssey into modern day Dublin in a tenderly detailed study of the city. Joyce even claimed that if Dublin were to be destroyed, it could be rebuilt brick by brick, using his work as a model! Although venerated by his esteemed peers, W.B. Yeats and Samuel Beckett, he struggled to achieve public recognition until late in life. Joyce is now internationally renowned as the literary genius that he was and his life and work is celebrated annually on Blooms day, June 16th.
