Lot Essay

This lot may be exempt from sales tax as set forth in the Sales Tax Notice at the back of this catalogue.

"The blue paintings are the interesting ones; the others despite their flamboyant means, are not unusual. In three respects Klein's blue paintings are related to certain American work. They are simple and broadly scaled, they tend to become objects and, consequently, they have a new intensity...Klein's paintings have an unmitigated, pure but very sensuous beauty" (D. Judd, excerpt from "In the Galleries, Arts Magazine, January, 1963).
