Lot Essay

Whilst sketching in Italy Salvatore Rosa was captured by a band of bodyguards. Whilst in captivity he started painting portraits of the gipsies. The chiefton who had seen his drawings said that if he could paint a portrait of the chief's wife he would set him free. Salvatore Rosa did this and consequently was set free.
