Lot Essay

Terence Cuneo was commissioned by the Royal College of Surgeons to paint a large group portrait of the Fellows of the College. Each Fellow individually sat for their portrait. Cuneo and Professor Sir David Smithers subsequently became life long friends after the sitting. David Waldorn Smithers (1908-1995) was Professor of Radiotherapy, London University (1943-73), Director of Radiotherapy, Royal Marsden Hospital (1943-73) and President of the Royal Institute of Radiology (1946-47).
