The Torpedo: A Poem to the Electrical Eel
London: sold by all the booksellers, 1777. 4to. (lacks half-title, title repaired along inner margin), modern morocco-backed marbled boards.
"Fourth" edition. All four editions of this scatalogical poem were published in the same year, and all are scarce. There is a reference to cricket and to the Duke of Dorset in the stanza beginning: "The vulgar pleasures of the field Alone from love the heart can shield" (p. 15), and a footnote which reads: "Every one knows the attachment of the Duke of D--rs--t to cricket: The following anecdote will prove it. Two clergymen were candidates for a living in his Grace's presentation, which he bestowed on the best Batsman". Padwick 892 -1.
