Edinburgh: T.P. Caldwell, 1840. 12mo., wood-engraved frontispiece and preliminary blank (slight splitting to block), original green limp cloth gilt, gilt edges (spine chipped, corners rubbed). Provenance: Anthony W. Partridge (inscription on front endpaper, dated 14 June 1847) -- Emberlin and Harrold, Marlborough (bookseller's label) -- H.A. Cohen (sold Phillips, London, 26 January 1995, lot 477).
The scarce second edition. The subtitle: "containing full directions for playing this elegant and manly game" is largely unaltered. There is a different frontispiece view of Lord's, without a caption, and a preface by Clarke, commenting on Nyren's death in 1837. Padwick 390.
