W. BAYLY

Details
W. BAYLY
The Cricket Chronicle for the season 1863 ... with full scores of matches

London: A.H. Bailey, 1864. 16mo. (title and subsequent leaf with repair along inner margin, title short at outer margin), original embossed cloth, gilt lettered and dated 1864 on spine and cover (rebacked with new endpapers, preserving original front pastedown with inscription, old spine relaid, somewhat soiled). Provenance: Charles Pratt Green, his gift to Thomas Padwick (signed inscription by Green on front pastedown, dated Malvern, March 13 1890, reading: "A slight acknowledgment of many kindnesses received from my friend Mr Thomas Padwick").

ONLY ISSUE. Published in the same year as the first issue of Wisden's Almanack, this is the only work by "Captain W. Bayly" listed either in Padwick or the BL catalogue. The cover is variously dated 1863 and 1864. A thicker publication than the 1864 Wisden, partly because of the inclusion of overseas matches, it sold at the much higher price of 2/6d. and, as Allen suggests, perhaps failed because it was more expensive. Allen 87; Padwick 902.
