W.O. WHITRIDGE
The South Australian Cricketers' Guide Season 1876-77 [1877-78; 1884-85]
Adelaide: E.S. Wigg [the later vol. W.O. Whitridge], 1877-78 and 1885. 3 vols., 8vo., pagination: I. [vi], 60p.; II. [iv], 101, [1]p. + 4 advertisement leaves + colophon leaf; III. 50p. with half tone portrait (title to 1877 browned), modern calf-backed cloth, spines gilt, original yellow printed wrappers bound in (wrappers to the first vol. laid down, front wrapper to second vol. slightly torn). Provenance: Robert Stratten Holmes (signature on titles, dated Liverpool, 1.1.89).
ALL PUBLISHED. A record of James Lillywhite's team, the fourth England team to visit Australia, is included in the 1876-77 season. The next volume was the longest since it also functioned as a "Footballer's Companion". After an unexplained gap of six years, the selling-point in the "third year of publication" was the inclusion of "a complete record of matches played by the Norwood Cricket Club". Will Whitridge, the editor, was himself a star bowler for the club, and the volume included a portrait of James Gooden, club captain for seventeen years. An introductory article, reprinted from the South Australian Register, complained that: "The cricket season of 1884-5 has been remarkable for a growing lack of interest in any fixtures except those of the 'show' kind. With fine weather the public will flock to the Oval to see a crack visiting team play, but the days when club cricket would draw have gone by". Padwick 3375. (3)
