Official Souvenir of McLaren's English Cricket Team in Australia, Season 1901-1902

Sydney: A.C. Rowlandson, N.S.W. Bookstall, [1901]. 8vo., 14 player portraits and other illustrations, blank scorecard on centre-pages (light browning and spotting), modern brown half calf and marbled boards, original pictorial wrappers bound in (spotted and chipped).

A pre-tour brochure with player portraits and biographies. Other illustrations are of the 1899 Australian touring team, and various grounds in England and Australia, including W.G. Grace walking out at Nottingham. Having got permission from the M.C.C. to choose his own side, MacLaren picked an unknown player from Lancashire league cricket, S.F. Barnes. In the first two Tests, Barnes took 19 wickets for 17 runs a-piece, and until he broke down with a knee injury in the third he was hailed as the greatest English bowler ever to visit Australia. Although MacLaren batted superbly, his side ultimately lost the series 4-1. Padwick 4425.
