The Third Australian Team in England

London: Cricket Press, [1882]. 8vo., pagination: vi, 131, [1]p. + advertisement leaf, 16 illustrations including 14 wood-engraved portraits (occasional light spotting), original pink printed wrappers (neatly rebacked, covers lightly soiled), modern protective cloth case. Provenance: R.N. Jones (ownership inscription on title).

Post-tour account of perhaps "the best ever" Australian team with a great quartet of bowlers in Spofforth, Garrett, Palmer and Boyle, immensely strong batsmen in Murdoch and Bonnor, and a wicket-keeper in Blackham who revolutionised the art. The single Test at the Oval, 28-29 August 1882, led to one of the most exciting finishes of all time, Spofforth taking 14 wickets for 90 runs, and in his last eleven overs 4 for 2, to snatch a sensational 7-run victory for Australia. A notice was afterwards printed in the Sporting Times "in affectionate memory of English cricket which died at the Oval on 29 August 1882, deeply lamented by a large circle of sorrowing friends and acquaintances. N.B. -- The body will be cremated and the Ashes taken to Australia". Padwick 4975.
