[LLOYD S. SMITH]
West Indies Cricket History and Cricket Tours to England, 1900, 1906, 1923
Port of Spain, Trinidad: Yuille's Printerie, 1922 [i.e. 1923]. 8vo., 5 plates, 3 folding, and 3 folding letterpress tables (final folding plate with short, clean tear affecting one portrait), maroon cloth, preserving original pictorial front wrapper (wrapper with abrasion marks and short tear to top margin). Provenance: Onslow Collection (sold Dominic Winters, Swindon, 5 October 2000, lot 220).
While the 1900 West Indian side was the first to tour England, their appointed captain, H.B.G. Austin, instead went to South Africa to fight in the Boer War, and it was only the strong impression made by the 1923 side, led by George Challenor, that enabled the islands to achieve Test match status. Challenor hit eight centuries and made 1,556 runs in first-class games for an average of 51.86. At the Scarborough Festival, the pace bowling of Learie Constantine, then twenty-two, George John and George Francis, had a strong Leveson-Gower's Eleven reeling at 29 for 6. Padwick 3674.
