Lot Essay

Designed for the Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes in Paris, 1925 where the present studyroom suite was granted a Golden Medal.

The architect Gerrit Jan Rutgers (1877-1962) belonged to the group of Amsterdam School architects from around 1917. His most important commissions are the Carlton Hotel (1925-1926) and the enlargement of the American Hotel (1928), both in Amsterdam. For the American Hotel Rutgers cooperated with the sculptor Theo Vos (1887-1948). This indicates the attribution of the carving to the present study suite.
