Lot Essay

During an active wartime career in the convoys, Onslow sank U-589 on 13th September 1942 and fought off attacks from Lützow and Admiral Hipper in December the same year in which her Captain (Rupert Sherbrooke) was awarded the VC. A year later she led another convoy escort against the Scharnhorst during the Battle of North Cape and took part in the Normandy landings in 1944. As leader of 17th Flotilla she oversaw the disposal by sinking of 110 U-Boats off Ireland between November 1945 and January 1946. In 1949 she was transferred to the Pakistan navy and renamed Tippu Sultan
