Built by Barclay, Curle & Co. Ltd. for Elder Dempter Line's service between Liverpool, Quebec and Montreal, Lake Champlain became the first merchant vessel to be fitted with the new wireless telegraph technology pioneered by Marconi. Acquired by Canadian Pacific in 1903, she became an immigrant ship, being renamed Ruthenia in 1913. On the outbreak of War in 1914 she served as the dummy battleship George V and was then used as a storeship and naval oiler. Taken to Singapore in 1929 for use as an oil hulk, she was captured by the Japanese in 1942 and renamed Choran Maru and was finally towed to Dalmuir for scrapping in 1949.
