Lot Essay
Although Norman Ough is considered one of the greatest marine modellers of the 20th century, comparatively little is known about the actual man behind these exceptional models. A postcard included with this lot and written from Ough to his brother in 1934 states that he was on a short-term contract at the Imperial War Museum ..cleaning up their collection of ship models - 4£ a week... A later clipping, also included, states that So dedicated was Ough to his craft that he twice went to hospital for malnutrition because, as legend has it, he considered time spent eating was wasted time that could be spent on his models.
Repulse, built by J. Brown & Co. and launched in 1916, was a battlecruiser displacing 33.250 tons. Her most famous action was her conflict with Bismarck, however she was sunk by a Japanese air attack on 10th December, 1941.
Nestor, built by Swan Hunter and launched in 1915, was a destroyer of 1,025 tons. She led the 13th Flotilla at Jutland but her torpedo attacks on Admiral Hipper's Lützow failed and she was finally overwhelemed and sunk by gunfire.
