Lot Essay

In 1933 Willink made two versions of the Members of Parliament. The present lot was different in composition from the second version (Jaffé, no. 156). The present lot is only part of the larger composition of the work that is shown in the oeuvre catalogue by Jaffé under no. 155. The original size of the work was 60 x 64 cm. It was probably the artist himself who changed the size of the original work by cutting it down. From the left part of the original composition with the two figures he made a new, signed work.
Both versions (no. 155 and no. 156) were shown at Kunsthandel Nieuwenhuizen Segaar in The Hague in 1934. The two versions of Members of Parliaments, together with two other paintings from the period ('De ontmoeting' and 'De geleerden') are part of a series of 'Coincidental meetings', a subject inspired by the absurdistic work of De Lautréamont.
