Lot Essay

Immediately following the outbreak of the First World War in August 1914, Gleizes was called up for military service and joined a regiment stationed in Toul, near Nancy. He continued to draw and paint watercolors during this period. This drawing is closely related to three gouaches depicting a suburban landscape, all dated 1914 (cf. Varichon, nos. 495-497). Gleizes painted his first abstract compositions in late 1914 and 1915.
