This drawing was inspired by Rembrandt's late self-portraits of the 1660s, in Kenwood House, and the National Gallery, London. "Every artist takes himself for Rembrandt," Picasso told Françoise Gilot (quoted in her Life with Picasso, New York, 1964, p. 51). Janie L. Cohen has observed, "Rembrandt's pictorial identification of his own ageing process as seen in his self-portraits was surely not lost on the ageing Picasso" (in "Picasso's Exploration of Rembrandt's Art, 1967-1972," Arts Magazine, New York, no. 2, October 1983, p. 119).
