Lot Essay

Monsieur D. is Villon's father, Eugène Duchamp, who made a prosperous living for himself and his family as a town notary. The artist painted and drew him on several occasions, and his brother, Marcel Duchamp, portrayed him once (see Schwarz, no. 191). Villon also executed an oil painting, dated 1913, which he based on the cubist configuration seen in this drawing and the related drypoint in the following lot, and composed in an oval format.
