Cette oeuvre fait partie d'un ensemble constitué d'une douzaine de petits paysages que Degas a peints en Italie dans les années 1856-58 (voir lot 3). Il est atypique par son sujet qui ne représente aucun monument connu ni aucun site classé, mais plutôt un lieu non identifiable où apparaissent les abords d'une ville, baignés par la clarté d'une journée ensoleillée. Degas est manifestement revenu à la réalisation de ce tableau bien des années plus tard, comme il l'a souvent fait, et, travaillant alors d'une manière bien plus libre, a intensifié les couleurs et simplifié les contrastes d'ombres et de lumières au premier plan et sur le côté droit.
This is one of the dozen or so small landscapes that Degas painted in Italy in 1856-58 (see notes on lot 3). It is unusual in representing none of the familiar monuments or landmarks, but rather an unidentified site on what appears to be the edge of a city, bathed in the bright sunlight of a clear day. Degas evidently returned to the picture years later, as he often did, and working in a much freer manner, he strengthened the colors and simplified the masses of dark and light in the foreground and at the right side.
