Le thème tragique d'Ugolin, l'un des héros damnés de la Divine Comédie de Dante, inspira de nombreux artistes. Dans le cadre de ses recherches pour l'élaboration de La Porte de l'enfer, Rodin exécuta une série de dessins inspirés de La Divine Comédie. Dans le présent lot, il choisit d'illustrer le moment précédent la fin tragique du personnage: Ugolin est enfermé, condamné lui et ses fils à mourir de faim.

While working on La Porte de l'Enfer, Rodin executed a series of works on paper inspired by Dante's "Divine Comedy". Announcing the tragic end of the myth, in the present work Rodin illustrates the moment at which Ugolino hears the locking of the door, condemning him and his family to die from hunger.
