AN OVER-AND-UNDER RIFLED FLINTLOCK SPORTING CARBINE BY MARCUS ZELNER IN WIENN

With heavy swamped octagonal barrels each rifled with seven grooves, the upper barrel signed and fitted with brass fore-sight and blued iron back-sight, and each retaining most of its original blued finish, the upper tang numbered 2, plain back-action locks of off-set configuration, the right-hand lock signed beneath the pan, the left-hand lock fitted with a larger steel on a U-shaped spring seated beneath the pan, figured walnut full stock carved with a series of scrolling mouldings in low-relief, the fore-end formed on the left as a separate full-length section, the butt with sliding patch-box cover, plain brass mounts of shaped outline, horn fore-end caps, original iron mounts for a sling, and a horn-tipped wooden ramrod.

Lot Essay

Marcus Zelner (1693-1758) married the daughter of the renowned gunmaker Felix Meier in 1726 and was himself admitted as Master Gunmaker in Vienna in the same year. Examples of his work are preserved in the former Imperial collection in Vienna and in the collection of the Princes von Liechtenstein, Vaduz.
