A RARE ITALIAN MILITARY WHEEL-LOCK TERZARUOLO
Late 16th Century
With octagonal barrel, large flat lock struck with a cloverleaf mark below the wheel (Neue Støckel 8447 for comparison), the latter retained by a flat ring with chamfered heart-shaped void, sliding pan-cover, walnut full stock, iron-bound 'fishtail' butt, moulded iron trigger-guard, baluster trigger, large iron fore-end cap of characteristic form, and iron-tipped wooden ramrod.

Lot Essay

Firearms of this type were used by heavy cavalry in the late 16th and 17th Centuries. It would appear likely that this example, in common with the majority, was in part made in Southern Germany for export. A comparable example with Nuremberg lock is in the Royal Armoury, Turin.
