A FLINTLOCK WENDER PISTOL, DUTCH OR GERMAN
circa 1670
With two-stage barrels released by a catch in front of the trigger-guard, engraved tang, slightly rounded lock engraved with a flowering sprig issuant from a monster (the cock perhaps an early working replacement), figured walnut full stock, the fore-end cut with a pair of broad flutes on the left and the butt with an early armoury stamp boldly struck opposite the lock, 'AF' conjoined, a coronet above, plain iron mounts including spurred bulbous pommel cut with single flutes about the base and over the top, moulded ramrod-pipes, and original iron-capped wooden ramrod.

Provenance
The armoury stamp is attributed to the armoury of Duke August Frederick von Holstein-Gottorp, Prince Bishop of Lübeck 1666-1706 (letter dated 1998 from Nils Drejholt, the Livrustkammaren, Stockholm). A Tschinke bearing the same stamp is in the Hallwyl Museum, Stockholm (Inv. A.27). Charles Marchal.
