A SPANISH LEFT-HAND DAGGER
Mid-17th Century
With sharply tapering three-stage blade, the forte cut with a fluted back panel changing to a panel of notched ornament, rectangular ricasso indented for the thumb, struck with bladesmith's mark on both sides between a pair of rings and punched with a pattern of small circles, iron hilt formed with a pair of writhen quillons with gadrooned button terminals, triangular guard outwardly flanged at the edges and finely chiselled with rows of tendrils tightly spiralling on flowerheads, in rows diminishing in size towards the top, with subsidiary flowerheads between, the edges and the guadapolvo all en suite, chiselled fluted compressed pommel, and the grip bound with wire between fluted collars.
