A BRESCIAN FLINTLOCK BELT PISTOL

With tapering barrel faceted at the breech and stamped 'Antonio Franzino' in two lines enclosed by coronets (the latter almost erased, di Carpegna, Fran. No.6, M7), rounded lock chiselled over its full surface with a pattern of scrolling flowers involving a demon mask at the rear, all in low relief and all on a finely punched matted ground, full iron mounts and three inlaid iron plaques all chiselled en suite, later carved figured walnut full stock, and wooden ramrod with moulded iron tip (belt hook replaced).

Lot Essay

The lock unsigned; the stamped inscription on the barrel is tentatively attributed to Antonio di Giacomo di Antonio, documented as a barrel-merchant in 1697 (see di Carpegna, Brescian Firearms, p.283)

The pistol would appear to have been refurbished within the second quarter of the 18th Century.
