A SILVER-MOUNTED FLINTLOCK BOX-LOCK TURN-OFF PISTOL BY OAKES, LONDON
Birmingham silver hallmarks for 1802
With octagonal barrel fitted with spring-bayonet released by a catch on the right-hand side of the action, the latter engraved with trophies-of-arms and incorporating a signed oval on the left, thumbpiece safety-catch also locking the steel, folding trigger, figured walnut butt profusely decorated with inlaid pattern of engraved silver flower heads carried by silver scrolling tendrils, enclosing a vacant silver escutcheon, and with silver cap cast in low relief, London proof marks.
