A FINE FRENCH CASED PAIR OF PERCUSSION TARGET PISTOLS BY LEPAGE ARQER DU ROI À PARIS
No.2943 circa 1820-25
With swamped octagonal sighted ratchet rifled barrels numbered 1 & 2 in gold, signed in ornate gold script incorporating ears of wheat, inscribed 'Acier Fondu' within a beaded oval inlaid in two colours of gold on the top flat, each inlaid with a band about the muzzle, case-hardened breeches inlaid with gold lines, a gold palmette and with maker's gold-lined oval stamp beneath, 'LP' with fasces between, engraved breech tangs incorporating the back-sight and also numbered in gold, case-hardened locks engraved with flowers and a trophy of Antique arms and signed in two colours of gold, figured walnut half-stocks with carved scallop-shell fore-end, chequered butts with ebonised pommels carved with an oak wreath, engraved case-hardened steel mounts including trigger-plate finial formed as a shield with helm above, set triggers, and most of their original finish: in original brass-bound fitted case veneered in mahagony (the lid cracked), the lid lined in padded, purple velvet (faded) with tooled and gilt red morocco border, the interior body lined in both dark green velvet and tooled and gilt red morocco, with full accessories including ivory-mounted ebony powder-flask, and the lid with vacant brass palmette escutcheon and urn-shaped recess for the thumb.
