FIRST EDITION, INSCRIBED BY KOUDELKA: 'To Allan the first man who published my pictures outside Czechoslovakia'. The French and English language editions were published simultaneously by Delpire and Aperture. The Open Book, pp.304-05; The Photobook, p.230 ('it was the publication of Gypsies in 1975 that sealed his reputation as ONE OF THE FINEST PHOTOGRAPHERS STILL USING THE HUMANIST DOCUMENTARY MODE').
