SUSAN MEISELAS

Carnival Strippers. New York: Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 1976. Oblong 4° (256 x 200mm). 73 black and white photographs. Original silver cloth, spine and front cover blocked in bind, original photo-illustrated dust-jacket (a few short closed tears, one on front panel closed from verso, small chip). Provenance: Camera magazine file copy (small stamp dated '8.6.77' on front blank).

FIRST EDITION of the book which earned Meiselas her Magnum membership. 'Any book allows its reader to distance himself. The curtain closing on the girl-show stage is replaced by the page turning over. Like the show, the book represents coexistent aspects of a phenomenon, one which horrifies, one which honors. If the viewer is appalled by what follows, that reaction is not so different from the alienation of those who participate in the shows' (Meiselas in her introduction). 101 Books pp.238-39; The Open Book, pp.312-13.
