Lot Essay

The service for which the present plate was made takes its name from the word inscribed beside the factory's hunting horn and the letter R found on the underside of other pieces from the service. It may be that it was intended for use in the Ménagerie at the schâteau de Chantilly. However, pieces that would seem to correspond are noted in a revolutionary inventory of the pantry at the main château done in 1792. For a discussion of the service and illustrations of a variety of pieces painted with variant arms of the Bourbon-Condé family including a bottle cooler now in the musée Condée at Chantilly painted with arms identical to those on the present plate, see Geneviève Le Duc, Porcelaine tendre de Chantilly au XVIIIe siècle, Paris, 1996, pp. 266-270.
